How It Works

How It Works

Your guide to voting, rankings, stats and graphics

Getting started

Unfair Sports is free. You need an account to vote; everything else is open to everyone.

  1. Sign up with Google. Tap Sign up at the top right and choose your Google account. No new password to remember. Returning? Log in uses the same Google button.
  2. Your account menu. Once you’re in, your initials (or photo) sit at the top right. Tap them for Account settings, quick links to vote, and Log out.
  3. Add a photo. In My Account, upload a picture, drag and zoom to frame it, then save. You can also change how your name is shown.

Getting around: the menu at the top has College Football and NBA dropdowns with each sport’s rankings, voting, the UNFAIRSports Index and media ballots, plus a Stats menu with player and team stats, team comparisons and the Chart Builder. On a phone, tap the ☰ button.

Vote in the polls

Every week you rank the teams: a College Football Top 25 (25 teams) and the NBA Power Rankings (all 30 teams). Open the ballot from the menu or vote in college football / vote in the NBA.

  1. Add teams. Tap a team in the list on the right (or below, on a phone) to drop it into the next open spot. Use the search box or the conference menu to find teams fast.
  2. Put them in order. Drag the ⋮⋮ handle, or use the ↑ ↓ arrows. Tap × to take a team off.
  3. Check the context. Under every team you’ll see its last game and result (for example W 31–17 vs Texas). On the college football ballot, the latest AP Top 25 and College Football Playoff rankings sit beside your ballot for comparison. Tap Hide if you’d rather not see them.
  4. Submit. Fill every spot and tap Submit ballot. You can come back and change it as many times as you like until voting closes. The closing time is shown at the top of the ballot.

Shortcut: from week two on, Start from my last ballot loads last week’s order so you only move what changed. Clear starts over.

Never miss a week

Turn on the Monday reminder switch under any ballot, or tick the polls you want in My Account. Every Monday morning we’ll email you when the ballot is ready, unless you’ve already voted that week. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.

How the rankings are scored

Ballots are scored just like the AP poll. A #1 vote is worth 25 points in college football (30 in the NBA), #2 is worth one less, and so on down to 1 point for the last spot. Points are added up across every ballot; ties go to the team with more first-place votes.

  • The Fan Poll counts every fan ballot. The Media Poll counts ballots from approved writers, podcasters and creators.
  • Rankings update live as ballots come in. See the college football rankings and the NBA rankings.
  • Every media voter’s full ballot is published with their name and outlet on the Media Ballots pages after voting closes. Fan ballots are never shown individually.
  • The latest official AP Top 25 and College Football Playoff rankings are on the home page too, with arrows showing who moved up or down.

The UNFAIRSports Index

The UNFAIRSports Index is our own computer ranking. It rates every team by the numbers: how efficient they are on offense and defense, how strong their schedule has been, and their results. It’s the opinion-free counterweight to the polls.

  • Find it under each sport in the menu (college football, NBA).
  • Use the conference menu to see one conference’s power rankings. Share it as a graphic and each team’s national rank is shown in brackets.
  • Fans vs. the Numbers, on the same page, lines up each team’s Fan Poll rank against its UNFAIRSports Index rank and flags the biggest gaps: who the fans rate higher than the numbers do, and who they’re sleeping on.

Stats

College football stats and NBA stats cover players and teams, with a rank for every number.

  1. Pick what to see. Switch between Players and Teams, choose a category (Passing, Rushing, Team Offense…), and pick the full season or a single week.
  2. Sort and search. Tap any column heading to sort by it (tap again to flip). Search by player or team name.
  3. National or conference ranks. With All conferences selected, every rank is national. Pick a conference and the ranks switch to within that conference.

Reading the colors: GreatGoodOKBadTerrible
Gold is the top 10%, light gold the top 30%, white the middle, pink the bottom 30% and red the bottom 10%. Whether a stat is “good” high or low (like interceptions thrown) is already accounted for.

Each category has a minimum (shown above the table) so a player with two carries doesn’t top the yards-per-carry list. Stats below the minimum show as Unranked on graphics.

Compare two teams

On a stats page, switch to Teams and tap Compare two teams, or tap VS next to any team.

  • Each team’s offense is lined up against the other team’s defense: efficiency, yards, third downs, turnovers, sacks and more, with ranks and colors.
  • Change either team from the drop-downs, tap ⇄ to swap sides, or tap an opponent on either schedule to jump straight to that matchup.
  • Use National ranks / Conference ranks to switch how teams are ranked. Opening a comparison from a conference list starts on conference ranks.
  • Previous meetings lists the recent head-to-head results.

Make and share graphics

Almost everything can become a branded graphic for social media.

  • Rankings and the UNFAIRSports Index: tap Share graphic.
  • A player or team stat card: tap any row in the stats table (or its ⤴ button).
  • A leaderboard: sort the stats table, then tap Leaderboard graphic.
  • A matchup: in a comparison, tap Make matchup graphic.
  • A chart: tap Make a chart on any stats page (or Stats → Chart Builder). Pick a bar chart of the leaders in any stat, or a scatter plot of any two stats against each other (better is always up and to the right), narrow it to a conference or position, highlight up to six teams or players, then tap Create chart.
  1. Choose a size: Feed 4:5 (Instagram, Facebook, Threads), Story 9:16, Square, or Wide 16:9 (X, YouTube).
  2. Choose the stats under Stats on graphic. On player cards you can add stats from other categories too, like a quarterback’s rushing touchdowns. Your picks are remembered next time.
  3. Share it: post straight to your app of choice, download the image, or copy the ready-made caption and link.

Every graphic credits where its numbers come from, so it’s ready to post as is.
